Antiquity of Smoking

*Herod*. lib. i. sec. 36. is referred to for some illustration, I suppose, of smoking through tubes. *Herodotus* supplies nothing: perhaps *Herodian* may be meant, though not very likely. Herb smoking was probably in use in Europe long before tobacco. But direct authority seems sadly wanting.
