Colinæus

By G. H. B.

In a copy of Horace (1539), and of Valerius Flaccus (1532), both bearing the name of *Colinæus*, I find a slight difference in the device and motto on the title-page. In the Valerius Flaccus the motto is, "Hanc aciem sola retundit virtus," and is written on a scroll coming from the mouth of Time; while in the Horace, the motto is "Virtus sola aciem retundit istam," and is placed on a tablet below the figure. I wish to inquire if this difference could warrant a doubt as to the authenticity of either; and secondly, whether anything is known of the origin of that motto?G.
