Winkel

I thought, some time since, that the places bearing this name in England, were taken from the like German word, signifying *a corner*. I find, on examination, that there is a village in Rhenish Prussia named "Winkel." It seems that Charlemagne had a wine-cellar there; so that that word is no doubt taken from the German words *wein* and *keller*, from the Latin *vinum* and *cella*.
